1. The board should plan to expand their group to include a broader
representation of the audience they seek to serve. The Board will
need to carefully study this process as they will not be well served
to add more life-tenured members. |
1. It did not appear as if the board composition represented
the broader audience of the museum. Expansion of board representation
involves careful study to ensure that board composition reflects
the community the museum aims to serve. |
2. As the education program has grown, however, they will need
to consider additional staff to achieve their goals. Staff may want
to talk with area colleges for work study or intern opportunities
and with the recently expanded Science Center about their strategies. |
2. The Visiting Committee observed that while the education program
offerings have expanded, staff levels have remained constant. The
Visiting Committee expresses concern regarding whether the museum
has explored the need or feasibility for increasing human resources
to sustain an expanded program. |
3. In the next phase of institutional planning, it will be extremely
important for the museum if the process is a combined Board and
staff initiative. BoardSource publishes several easy-to-read publications
on facilitating board-staff planning (see Resource List). |
3. The museum’s planning process appears
to be largely staff-driven. Trends in the profession indicate
that effective institutional planning is informed through a combined
board-staff initiative. |
